The CFAES Messaging Service account structure is set up to provide the easiest way of advertising your e-mail address. But behind that simplicity lies a complex structure that may come up on occasion. THis Article will attempt to help account holders understand the difference between their multiple account names.

Simple Account Name

The simple account name is just the account portion of account@domain. For the account brutus.99@cfaes.osu.edu the simple account name is just brutus.99.

Published Account Name

The published account name is the address one would usually give to others outside of their organization and has cfaes.osu.edu as the domain in account@domain. Brutus' published account name would be brutus.99@cfaes.osu.edu.

Real Account Name

The real account name is where the complexity lies. Each account holder resides within a unique organizational domain on the CFAES Messaging Service. We usually do not see this domain as it is aliased to the simpler "cfaes.osu.edu". While using the published or even simple account name may suffice for many of the messaging applications in use, the real account name may be needed from time to time. It is uncommon to use the real account name for an email address, but it does deliver email.

If Brutus were a member of the CFAES Department of Mascots, his real account name would be brutus.99@mascots.cfaes.ohio-state.edu.

Please consult your technical support to determine what your real account name domain is if you need to use it.
