What is WHOIS?

Everyone affiliated with The Ohio State University is given a unique name. That name is your last name, plus a period, plus whatever number it takes to make the name unique.

A database is kept of everyone's unique name and an associated e-mail address to forward e-mail to. If mail arrives at OSU.EDU addressed to Laufman.1@osu.edu, the system looks up that name and forwards the e-mail to whatever address Laufman.1 has supplied. If one does not have a forwarding address, the e-mail is returned to the sender.

This whole system, along with other publicly available information about OSU affiliated people (students, faculty and staff) is known as the WHOIS system.

How To Change Your WHOIS Information

Should you wish to change your listed campus e-mail address or forwarding address, instructions must be given to the maintainers of the campus WHOIS directory.

Printed e-mail information in the campus directories is taken from the electronic directory, which UTS maintains. To choose or change your electronic mail address for the online and printed directories, do one of the following:

  • Notify UTS by visiting Customer Services, 508 Baker Systems, 1971 Neil Ave. Bring your OSU ID.
  • Notify UTS by phoning 614-688-4357 (688-HELP). Be prepared to prove your identity with an OSU ID number or SSAN.
  • Notify UTS by E-mail request, along with your social security number and or OSU ID number, sent to: 8help@osu.edu
Say something like -
Please change my UserName.2@OSU.EDU WHOIS forwarding address
     	From: OldName@old.place.ohio-state.edu
     	  To: NewName@postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu

This information and more about e-mail can be found on page 4 of The Ohio State University Faculty/Staff Directory.
