While on a vacation, a business trip, or foreign assignment, you can access your postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu e-mail from anywhere in the world with a browser (Netscape or Internet Explorer, for example) connected to the Internet.
Many conventions have free Internet rooms, and most cities have storefront Internet connectivity for a nominal hourly rate, I recently paid $7.50/hour.
- Point a browser to: http://postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu:8100
- Enter your e-mail username and password. Your username is that part of your e-mail address to the left of the "@" sign in your postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu e-mail address. For example, mine is: hlaufman
- Click "Login"
- Click "Mailboxes"
- Click "INBOX"
You are now in an e-mail client (like Eudora) type environment where you can click on a message to read it, then reply or forward the message, and so on. These messages will remain available for download later unless you delete them. - Click "Log out" when done.
We suggest that you try this out before going on your journey so you are familiar with the rich interface. The District support and Computer Operations people can answer any questions you may have.
If security is an issue, your e-mail can be accessed through a secure web interface at: https://postoffice.ag.ohio-state.edu:9100
The interface is the same as above, but you will first be led through the acceptance of a security certificate. Pay close attention to the complete URL.
Users who wish to use a traditional e-mail connection (Eudora and Outlook, for example) while traveling, but don't want to leave their e-mail on foreign machines, may want to look at the features of IMAP. Most popular email clients support IMAP which allows the user to access their email without downloading it to the machine they are using. Our postoffice software supports IMAP.
